Expert Guidelines: Brainstorming for Fresh Legal Dissertation Ideas

Experts advise students to use a brainstorming technique when they need to choose dissertation ideas. If you are majoring in law, you can also brainstorm ideas for your dissertation writing. You cannot start writing before you come up with an interesting idea to write about. This part of the work seems harder compared to compiling a paper of many hundred words, so you should start considering ideas as soon as you receive your assignment.

So, brainstorming helps you use your thoughts and knowledge to create several research questions that you would like to answer while writing your dissertation. If you are planning to work as a lawyer after graduation, you should improve your brainstorming abilities.

It is a good idea to forget about everything that you have read about preparing your paper, take a short break, and then sit at the desk. The main idea of brainstorming is to come up with unexpected ideas, write them down, and then choose the ideas that you can use for your legal dissertation. Different students demonstrate different ways of brainstorming. Typically, you need to do the following:

  1. You need to grab plenty of paper, colored pens, and a cup of coffee to get started. Many students use highlighters to outline important keywords and sort the ideas.
  2. No matter what ideas you come up with, you should write them down. You do not have to follow any patterns; the important thing is to write as many ideas as possible within a limited amount of time.
  3. You can study the ideas of other students to develop your own. There are also many simple prompts online that you can use in order to make your brainstorming more efficient. Either way, you should stay focused and motivated.
  4. When you are done brainstorming, you should create subtopics for the ideas you have and choose the topics that are the most interesting to you.
  5. After you compose a short list of potential ideas, you should do a quick literature review. Make sure you understand what you should write about, can explain the main legal terms and concepts, and have reliable sources to use.
  6. It makes sense to check whether you can describe the ideas in other words. Re-phrasing often helps make your ideas sound and concise.

When you have several good ideas, you should visit your supervisor and approve your dissertation topic. You should be prepared and explain why you want to study a certain topic, why it is important, and what aspect of study you will focus on.
